On Sunday 23rd March, we opened our doors at Gracie Barra Arnold to host a free women’s self defence class in Nottingham, and the energy in the room was something special.
It was great to see so many women from Arnold and the wider Nottingham area come together, all for the same reason. To learn, to grow, and to take a positive step towards feeling more confident in themselves.
We’re incredibly proud of everyone who took part.
What Real Self Defence Looks Like
When people think about self defence, they often imagine physical techniques or fighting back.
What we explored in this session was something different.
Real self defence starts long before anything becomes physical. It is about awareness, decision-making, and confidence. Recognising situations early, trusting your instincts, and knowing how to respond all play a key role in staying safe.
Throughout the session, we focused on showing that self defence is not about being aggressive, but about being prepared and in control.
More Than Just a Jiu-Jitsu Class
Although we are a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academy, this session was not about learning sport techniques or competition training.
Instead, we focused on simple, practical concepts that can be applied in real-world situations. The aim was to make everything accessible, especially for those who had never trained before.
For many of the women in the room, this was their first experience of Jiu-Jitsu, and it showed how effective it can be when adapted for self defence.
Confidence, Boundaries, and Using Your Voice
One of the biggest takeaways from the session was that confidence is not just something you feel, it is something you can practise.
We explored how body language and communication can directly influence both how others see you and how you feel in yourself. Standing tall, making eye contact, and speaking clearly are not just small details. They are signals that show intent, create space, and help you stay in control of a situation.
This linked closely with one of the key themes of the class, setting boundaries.
Understanding your own value and being able to say no is a huge part of personal safety. In many situations, it is not physical techniques that make the difference, it is how you carry yourself and how you communicate.
In Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, we use structure and positioning to stay safe and in control. In everyday life, your posture, your voice, and your presence act in the same way. They create distance, establish limits, and can prevent situations from escalating.
What was great to see was how quickly this started to click. As the session went on, people became more assertive in how they moved and how they spoke.
Not because they suddenly felt confident, but because they were acting with intent – that is often where real confidence begins.
Awareness Changes Everything
As the session went on, we looked at how awareness plays a key role in staying safe.
Training like this helps you become more aware of your surroundings, more aware of people, and more aware of potential risks before they develop.
The goal is not to fight, it is to avoid danger where possible and make better decisions earlier.
A Great Group and Atmosphere
What really stood out was the atmosphere in the room.
This was a group of women supporting each other, encouraging each other, and growing in confidence together. That kind of environment makes all the difference, especially for those trying something new for the first time.
To everyone who came along, thank you.
Your energy and openness made the session what it was. Seeing that growth in confidence, even in a short space of time, is exactly why we run these classes.
Taking the Next Step with Jiu-Jitsu and Women’s Self-Defence in Nottingham
While this session focused on awareness, communication, and real-world self defence, these are also the foundations of what we teach every day on the mats.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gives you the opportunity to build these skills over time in a structured and supportive environment. You learn how to stay calm under pressure, how to control situations safely, and how to apply technique rather than relying on strength.
It is a long-term approach to self defence. One that develops not just your ability to protect yourself, but also your confidence, decision-making, and mindset.
For many of the women who attended, this was just the starting point.
